Cochran, DDS, PhD is a graduate of the University of Virginia and received his D.D.S., and Ph.D., in Biochemistry from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV).  He also was trained in Periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Cochran is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School.

Presentation #1 - Treatment of recession defects: long-term evidence and predictability of Emdogain - Dr. Michael McGuire, DDS

Speaker: Dr. Michael McGuire, DDS, USA

Biography

Dr. Michael McGuire, DDS and Certificate of Periodontics, Emory University School of Dentistry, Atlanta, GA, USA. Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Baylor University, Waco, TX, USA. Lecturer for both national and international audiences. Recipient of the Robinson Regeneration Award, the Clinical Research Award and the Master Clinician Award by the American Academy of Periodontology. Author of over fifty scientific articles and textbook chapters on periodontology. Member of the editorial board of multiple publications, including the Journal of Periodontology and the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He is a director of the American Board of Periodontology and has served as president of numerous dental organizations, including the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

Aims

This presentation will provide clinical and histological evidence on the effectiveness of coronally advanced flaps with the use of Emdogain® in the treatment of recession defects. This clinically-oriented lecture will blend diagnostic guidelines and step-by-step techniques to provide a well-rounded understanding regarding this treatment option, and when it is indicated.  New information on the long-term stability of this procedure will be presented.

Presentation #2 - Current advances in guided bone regeneration materials and implant surfaces - Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Donos, DDS, MS, FHEA, FRCSEng, PhD

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Donos DDS, MS, FHEA, FRCSEng, PhD, UK

Biography

Prof. Dr. Nikolaos Donos DDS, MS, FHEA, FRCSEng, PhD. Head & Chair of Periodontology and the Director of Clinical Research at the UCL-Eastman Dental Institute and Director of the Oral Health Theme at the UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Centre in London/UK.

Aims

The routine use of titanium dental implants has facilitated the reconstruction of totally and partially edentulous patients in a predictable manner. Today, recent advances in the type of implant surfaces have resulted in faster osseointegration and bone to implant contact allowing earlier loading and faster treatment  for the patient. More specifically, in recent studies it has been shown that the use of hydrophilic surfaces is superior than hydrophobic surfaces, an observation with significant clinical impact.

Currently, the routine use of the GBR principle facilitates the prosthodontically driven placement of dental implants.  It has been suggested that a number of factors are associated with the successful outcome following GBR, including the use of an appropriate barrier material and a bone graft to maintain the space created by the membrane. The use of new synthetic membranes and bone substitutes might offer valid alternatives for bone regeneration in association with implants.

Objectives

During this presentation, an update on the recent studies in relation to the effect of hydrophilic  implant surfaces during bone healing and the use of different biomaterial for GBR will be critically appraised and future perspectives will be evaluated.

Presentation #3 - Established and new implant concepts - Stephen T. Chen, BDS, MDSc, PhD

Speaker: Stephen T. Chen, BDS, MDSc, PhD, Australia.

Biography

Stephen T. Chen, BDS, MDSc, PhD, Senior Fellow, Centre for Oral Health Science, School of Dental Science, The University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI); Chairman of the Australasian ITI Section; Chairman of the ITI Education Core Committee

Aims

With the progress of implant therapy, treatment options have expanded and the number of patients receiving implants has increased substantially in recent years.  Long-term outcome data is a crucial requirement for an implant system which must be carefully balanced against innovations in materials and techniques that are necessary to continuously improve clinical treatment.
Long-term clinical evidence on well-established products, new implant solutions and latest study results will be presented in this lecture.

Reconstructive Periodontal Plastic Surgery in the Esthetic Zone.

Straumann Workshop - June 6th, 2012

Presentation #1 - Reconstructive Periodontal Plastic Surgery in the Esthetic Zone - Prof. Giovanni Zucchelli

Speaker: Prof. Giovanni Zucchelli, Italy

Biography

Prof. Giovanni Zucchelli, Professor of Periodontology at Bologna University, Italy. A widely published scholar and the winner of numerous prizes for research in his field, he holds both a doctorate in Dentistry and a PhD in Medical Biotechnology applied to Dentistry. He is an active member of the European Federation of Periodontology and the Italian Society of Periodontology. Prof. Zucchelli also serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Aesthetic Dentistry and has authored a text book on soft tissue plastic surgery.

Abstract

The need for knowledge and skills in periodontal surgery is growing as the awareness and high esthetic demands of patients increase. This workshop is designed to enhance and develop your skills in periodontal regenerative surgery. The surgical procedures will be taught on swine mandibles and will provide a clear understanding of each procedure. Topics to be covered include: flap design, simplified papilla preservation, application of Enamel Matrix Derivative (Emdogain®), suture and post-operative care. Focus will be obviously given to surgeries in the esthetic zone for the treatment of bony defects as well as gingival recession.
