Descripción

The placement of zygomatic implants is perhaps the most complicated procedure in implant dentistry. As the indications for the use of zygomatic implants has expanded since their introduction in 1998, they have become an important component of the armamentarium of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and hence, a much more commonly executed procedure. Therefore, it is important that residents in oral and maxillofacial surgery receive the appropriate training that provides an “in-depth” knowledge of the zygomatic implant and the surgical procedures involved in placing them. Currently, there are few courses available for such training. The courses that do exist do not provide training in all aspects of the zygomatic implant process: patient selection, diagnostic planning, surgical simulation, surgical procedure, prosthesis conversion and fabrication and finally, follow up and maintenance.

The Northwell Zygomatic Implant Workshop will address the totality of the zygomatic implant procedure: from patient selection to planning to surgical execution and finally prosthesis fabrication and long-term follow up and maintenance. The course will be composed of one half-day of lectures, one half-day of benchtop implant placement on patient-specific dry skull models followed by one half-day experience to place zygomatic implants on fresh cadaver specimens. There will be a summary and in-depth review at the conclusion of the two-day workshop.

The course will include obtaining the appropriate CT studies on the cadaver specimens that attendees will place zygomatic implants in. Specimen specific models will be printed and used for dry skull benchtop implant placement exercises prior to proceeding to implant placement on the same fresh cadaver specimen. Finally, a conversion prosthesis will be attached to the zygomatic implants on the cadaver specimens after the placement of the zygomatic implants.

The biomechanical principles for force distribution under function will be presented. The number and the proper distribution of implants will also be reviewed. The rational for the newly redesigned zygoma implants.
