Basel 6 May 2020:As part of its strategy to lead in the area of implant immediacy, the Straumann Group has announced a new zygomatic implant solution that it will bring to market in collaboration with Southern Implants. The new solution combines proven implant design features with the advantages of Straumann’s BLX and BLT implant prosthetic range for fixed overdentures. The new system comprises two designs – to cater for differences in bone availability and morphology – and can be used with the Straumann CARES digital workflow to plan the implant position by computer. It will be sold exclusively by Straumann and is currently undergoing clinical evaluation in eight international centers prior to initial market release. Centers of excellence to increase access to zygomatic treatment Zygomatic procedures constitute a niche segment because the treatment is complex and requires specialist experience. For this reason, Straumann is working together with leading international surgeons to establish centers of excellence devoted to advancing techniques, sharing knowledge, enhancing skills, and training more specialists. About zygomatic implants Zygomatic implants have been used for several years and differ from conventional dental implants in that they are anchored in the zygomatic (cheek) bone rather than the maxilla (upper jaw). They are used in patients with insufficient bone in the posterior upper jaw, due for example to age, tumor resection, trauma, or atrophy. Because of the firm stability achievable in the dense bone of the zygomatic region, and the wide stress distribution achieved on these tilted implants, a prosthesis can often be placed immediately at the time of surgery.
