Sustainability

Creating value in a sustainable manner

Corporate responsibility at Straumann means “simply doing more” to create value in a sustainable manner for our customers and their patients, our employees, the communities in which we operate, and the environment.

Enhancing quality of life, reducing our environmental footprint

We are committed to enhancing the quality of life not only for the million or so patients treated with a Straumann solution each year, but also for patients with insufficient access to dental care. We are also committed to responsible manufacturing that reduces our environmental footprint. Our focus on resource efficiency includes reducing scrap and water use. Our sustainability reporting follows the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI – see also the “Addendum GRI Sustainability Reporting to the Straumann Annual Report” that complements our Annual Report).

Open and continuous dialogue with our stakeholders

Open and continuous dialogue with our stakeholders is another important part of responsible corporate behavior at Straumann. Company visits are one of the many opportunities we have for direct contact with stakeholders. Visitors include customers, educators, scientists, investors, analysts, politicians, representatives of the media, members of the general public, and business/cultural delegations from various countries.

Sustainable contribution to the quality of life

Enhancing the quality of life for patients through our innovative and lasting dental solutions is our most essential contribution to sustainability. To ensure that our solutions do indeed last long and offer peace of mind, we focus strongly on research and development, quality, and extensive education. At the same time, we work hard to ensure that our business practices are also sustainable. This includes fostering a culture built on strong principles, attractive working conditions and equal opportunity. It also involves continuously measuring and managing our comparatively small environmental impacts. The prominent external factors influencing our business are global economic conditions and the longterm development of our markets. Long-term demographic trends favor the development of dental markets. Since many of our products are predominantly used by older patients who experience dental complications as they age, the growing percentage of people aged 60+ will likely have a significant impact on the long-term development of our markets. Aside from this, as a responsible company we recognize that many people do not have access even to basic dental care. For this reason, Straumann supports charitable activities that have provided dental treatment for several thousand underprivileged people in recent years, including many children.

Ethical behavior among employees

To safeguard ethical business behavior, Straumann has a Code of Conduct and internal policies that formalize our commitment to exclude unfair competition, corruption, misleading marketing, or discrimination. Straumann uses the Code of Conduct as a basis for managing key sustainability issues. For more on our “Leadership Principles” or our “Managing Diversity” initiative, read the Sustainability Report.

Customers are our inspiration

Customers are our inspiration. We make it a priority to maintain and strengthen our commitment to their needs. Understanding our customers: Straumann addresses the needs of a broad range of customers across dentistry, including general practitioners and specialists, dental laboratories and technicians. Ethical and clear communication: Truthfulness and accuracy of our marketing material are essential. Much of the scientific information used to endorse our products is peer-reviewed. We adhere to guidelines that provide marketing materials which are ethical and accurate. Services beyond solutions: Our CRM-based, direct sales model enables us to build individual relationships with our customers and to add significant value to our Services – for example in practice building, or new product training. Patient care and quality: Quality, performance, and reliability are the core of our corporate responsibility and success. To maintain and raise our high standards, we offer extensive education and training in collaboration with the ITI and dental schools around the world. We meet all regulatory requirements to ensure compliance in product design and production, and do not accept shortcuts to market in order to boost short-term sales. We adhere to the precautionary principle of risk management and voluntarily perform field safety corrective actions in alignment with the applicable laws and regulations whenever product issues arise.

Supporting communities in need of basic dental care

We sponsor various initiatives that provide access to dental treatment and education about oral hygiene. All requests for Corporate Sponsoring are evaluated by an internal committee that reports regularly to the Executive Management Board. Each project is evaluated in terms of fundamental human needs and the expectations of our stakeholders. Responsible and ethical behavior: Our expectations regarding ethical behavior and upholding human rights are clearly outlined in our Code of Conduct. Since we expect the same behavior from our suppliers, we have also devised a Supplier Code of Conduct. The code specifies our expectations regarding working conditions, human rights protection and business ethics.

Environmental protection in production processes

At Straumann, environmental protection means more than complying with applicable laws and regulations relating to environmental protection, health, and safety in the workplace. Instead, environmental concerns are an integral part of responsible business practice. Each employee is encouraged to consider environmental protection as a part of their daily responsibility. Ensuring the safety and quality of our products is our priority in all production processes. When evaluating the manufacturing of our products, our main focus lies on the following: Optimize titanium and other raw materials consumption, minimize paper waste, monitor electricity consumption and COemissions, minimize water consumption, minimize waste in the form of refuse, contaminated materials, solvents and hydroxide sludge. You can find more detailed data and figures on environmental protection at Straumann in our Sustainability Report. Also, our Code of Conduct encourages employees to consider the protection of the environment.
