Single tooth restoration in the maxilla using the Straumann® PURE® Ceramic Implant Monotype: one year follow up

This case describes a single tooth restoration in the maxilla using the Straumann® PURE® Ceramic Implant Monotype. The results obtained confirm very good clinical performance of the Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant Monotype as well as its big potential to provide greater esthetic outcomes.
Initial situation
The patient is a 34-year-old, periodontally healthy woman with no smoking habits. She presented herself to the Dentistry Clinic of the University of Basque Country missing tooth #14 extracted due to a failed endodontic treatment (Fig. 1-3). The patient met the inclusion criteria of a clinical study with the objective of evaluating peri-implant hard and soft tissue’s stability following placement of the Straumann® Pure Ceramic Implant Monotype
Treatment planning
Treatment planning included placing a Straumann® PURE® Ceramic Implant Monotype (ZLA® surface) with an endosteal diameter of 4,1mm and a length of 10mm. Conventional impressions were taken to make the surgical template that will be used as a guide during surgery.
Surgical procedure
Since the surgery was performed more than 6 months after tooth extraction, the implant was placed in completely healed bone.
First, a mucoperiosteal flap was elevated. Then, an implant bed was prepared by means of consecutive drilling (Ø2.2 mm, 2.8 mm, 3.5 mm drills) and appropriately profiled using profile drill. Next, the Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant Monotype was placed (Fig. 4-7). The implant was placed in a type II bone with an insertion torque of about 40Ncm and without any bone augmentation procedure.
Prosthetic procedure
After 6 weeks of uneventful healing, a conventional impression was taken and sent to laboratory for preparation of the final prosthesis Regarding the prosthetic phase, it is initiated 6 weeks after the implant placement. It is a fixed cemented implant-borne prosthesis made of Zirconia. In this case, we use a glass ionomer cement (Fig. 8-12).
Final result
After 1 year follow up, the final result meets the patient’s high esthetic demands (Fig. 13-14). In addition, it resolves her functional problems too. Therefore, we can say that we fulfilled the expectations of the patient at a 100%. The results obtained show a very good clinical performance of the Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant Monotype a prospective study with a larger sample number is currently being conducted.
