Scanned with precision: 3Shape TRIOS® 3 outperforms the competition in comparison study

The 3Shape TRIOS® 3 outperformed the Medit i500 and Planmeca Emerald as the statistically more precise scanner.

There is a growing role for digital methods, such as computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CADCAM), in modern dentistry. Intraoral scanners (IOSs) are known to offer excellent accuracy for short-span prostheses. However, the debate persists around the accuracy of IOSs in scanning complete arches. This is why further validation is needed on the efficacy of commercially available IOSs.

A new in vitro study, published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry compared the complete-arch trueness and precision of three commercially available scanners.

Researchers used three IOSs (3Shape TRIOS®, Medit 1500, and the Planmeca Emerald) in their latest software versions to scan dentate stone casts from 19 patients. The same casts were also scanned with a laboratory scanner (3Shape E3) as a reference. Files were exported in STL format and inserted into a metrology 3D mesh comparison software program.

Do you want to see how the 3Shape TRIOS® 3 Intraoral Scanner can rock your practice?

When the results of the comparison study emerged, a significant difference in trueness was reported. The Planmeca Emerald showed significantly lower trueness values than both the Medit i500 and the 3Shape TRIOS® 3. In terms of precision, the 3Shape TRIOS® 3 scanner was significantly more precise than the other scanners. When it came to reproducing the files of the reference scanner, the Medit i500 produced files that significantly underestimated the reference scanner’s files. Both the Planmeca Emerald and 3Shape TRIOS® 3 performed well in neither overestimating nor underestimating the reference scanner files.

The comparison study was conducted by Dr. George Michelinakis, DDS, MSc, MPhil, Dr. Dimitrios Apostolakis, DDS, MSc, MSc, Dr. Andreas Tsagarakis, DDS, Mr. George Kourakis, BSc and Mr. Emmanuil Pavlakis, CDT.

The study results are great news for dentistry professionals using Straumann’s handheld 3D solution for powder-free full colour intraoral scanning. The 3Shape TRIOS® 3 is known to offer a number of benefits to both users and patients:

  • Patient comfort: Fast, easy to use, and creates documented-accurate digital color impressions.
  • Accuracy: Capable of measuring shades of teeth and adding HD photos.
  • Handling: Available with pen grip or handle.
  • Compatibility: Open STL data format.
  • Freedom of wireless scanning: No wires and easy battery exchange.
