This award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR. It is designed to recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding research achievements in research and its translation through clinical research in periodontal diseases.
Anton Sculean is professor and chairman of the Department of Periodontology at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He graduated in 1990 from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, and has received his postgraduate training at the Universities Münster, Germany, and Royal Dental College Aarhus, Denmark, followed by his habilitation (Ph.D.) at the University of Saarland, Homburg, Germany. He was the President of the IADR Periodontal Research Group (2009-2010), the Swiss Society of Periodontology (2012-2016), and the European Federation of Periodontics (2018-2019).
Prof. Sculean is a globally recognized researcher and clinician in the field of periodontology with more than 370 peer-reviewed scientific articles published in leading periodicals focusing on periodontal research and related disciplines. In his work, he focuses on preclinical and clinical research in connection with periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic-aesthetic periodontal therapy, and the use of antibiotics, antiseptics, and novel approaches in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.
He is also the recipient of the IADR Periodontal Research Group Anthony Rizzo Award in 2004 and the IADR/Periodontal Research Group Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine in 2012.
