What is this about?
- The presence of women in dental education and the workforce is growing
- Still gender disparities in dental specializations and leadership are ongoing
- Learn how the Women Implantology Network (WIN) is driving positive change globally

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the number of female dental graduates has been steadily increasing, reaching 54.3% in 2023 compared to 47.3% in 2013. However, when it comes to enrollment in advanced programs, significant disparities remain. For instance, in the 2021-22 academic year, women comprised of only 20.3% in oral and maxillofacial surgery programs. This stark difference highlights the persistent gender inequality in surgical specialties. Although the growing number of female graduates has helped bridge the gender gap in dentistry, disparities still exist in the workforce. In 2023, women accounted for only 37.7% of practicing dentists. What factors contribute to this imbalance?
Systemic challenges
Many women encounter systemic challenges that hinder their career progression, including gender insensitivity, a lack of female mentors and role models, dual family and professional responsibilities, disparities in career advancement and salaries, and ongoing gender discrimination. Despite women making up 50-70% of dental school graduates, relatively few pursue specialization in implantology. This has led to a shortage of female role models in the field, which, in turn, contributes to fewer women owning practices, holding leadership positions, or speaking at major industry events and in the grand scheme of things this could subsequently lead to a shrinkage in the market.
