Straumann-botiss YoungPro Award 2018 goes to Piero Papi
"Immediate implant placement and peri-implant augmentation with a porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (mucoderm®) and synthetic bone (maxresorb®) in the esthetic area"
Basel/Berlin, 12 November 2018: At the botiss bone & tissue World Congress in Berlin, the 2018 Straumann-botiss YoungPro Award in Regenerative Dentistry was presented to Dr Piero Papi from Sapienza University in Rome, for his work on implant placement and bone augmentation in the esthetic area of the mouth. The award is sponsored by Straumann and botiss and is worth €10 000.
Daniel Recher (Head Global Product Mgmt Biomaterials at Straumann), Pietro Papi, Amruta Joshi and Oliver Bielenstein (Managing Partner botiss)
The winning entry
Entitled ‘Immediate implant placement and peri-implant augmentation with a porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (mucoderm®) and synthetic bone (maxresorb®) in the esthetic area’, Dr Papi’s winning submission covers 15 single-tooth replacements in the front of the mouth, performed in 15 patients up to 8 weeks after tooth extraction. A guided-bone regeneration procedure, using a synthetic bone-graft together with a 3-dimensional matrix was performed in each case to build up bone around the implant. Dr Papi’s work shows that the contour and attachment of the gingiva around the implant was successfully augmented and remained stable after 12 months.
The Straumann-botiss YoungPro Award is a bi-annual prize, which was created in 2015 with the aim of fostering and encouraging the development of young dental professionals in the field of regenerative dentistry and dental biomaterials research. Dental practitioners, students, researchers, etc. under the age of 35 compete for the prize by submitting original work that contributes to the advancement of treatment/care or research in regenerative dentistry. The winner receives a cash prize of €10 000 and the top three entrants win a trip to the bone & tissue days World Congress in Berlin. The previous winners are Dr Andreas Pabst (Germany) and Dr Vitor Sapata (Brazil).
