Bone augmentation procedures are frequently required in implant dentistry to manage horizontal and vertical alveolar ridge deficiencies resulting from tooth loss, prolonged edentulism, removable prostheses, or previous iatrogenic interventions. Autogenous bone remains the gold standard grafting material due to its osteogenic, osteoinductive, and osteoconductive properties. The Split Bone Block (Shell) Technique represents a reliable approach for three-dimensional ridge reconstruction. The technique involves harvesting and splitting an autogenous cortical bone block to create a rigid biological framework filled with particulate autogenous bone, promoting volume stability, rapid revascularization, and high-quality regeneration. Despite its biological advantages, the procedure is technique-sensitive and requires advanced surgical expertise.
The integration of digital workflows in implant dentistry has significantly enhanced treatment accuracy and predictability. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), intraoral scanning, and digital planning software enable prosthetically driven implant positioning and precise defect assessment. Digital integration of bone augmentation procedures allows accurate graft volume estimation, guided surgical execution, and improved interdisciplinary collaboration. Contemporary implantology therefore combines biological principles with digital technologies to optimize clinical outcomes and standardize treatment protocols.

Dr. Romain Doliveux is currently the Education Delegate of the French ITI section. His practice is dedicated to surgical implant rehabilitations, with two clinics in France and Germany. After earning his Certificate in Biomaterials from Marseille University, France (2009), he completed his oral surgery residency at the SchloĂź Schellenstein Clinic (Prof. F. Khoury) in Germany and received his Oral Surgery Specialty from the MĂĽnster Dental School Germany (2014). Dr Doliveux was then promoted as a Senior surgeon in the surgical department of the Clinic SchloĂź Schellenstein (2015) and earned a Master Of Science in Implantology & Dental Surgery from the MĂĽnster Dental School Germany (2015). He has published extensively and lectured on national and international level about bone grafting procedures in combination with digital technologies.
